A sunny day in the capital of Bavaria

Munich is a popular tourist destination which is sometimes known as Germany's "secret capital". Why? With its numerous places of interest and an air of self-confidence the city is one of the most prosperous in the country. Its economy is very active in technology and the service industries. Companies such as Allianz, Munich Re, BMW, MAN, Siemens and Infineon have their headquarters here. In terms of publishing houses Munich is second only to New York City.

Center of the city is the old square Marienplatz (named after the golden statue of Mary) with the Old and New Townhall. The townhall tower has a mechanical clock with moving figures that show a medieval jousting tournament and a performance of the "Schäffler" dance ("Barrel-makers' dance").

The biggest attraction Munich can offer is the annual Oktoberfest, which takes place every autumn since 1810. Although there are rollercoasters and such, the two-week fair is rather famous for the tonnes of beer that are consumed during the event.
